Christopher Wager Cosman grew up in Millstream, NB. He was the 13th of 14 children born to John Nelson Cosman and Lydia Ann Sheck. Christopher comes into my family when he and his Common-law wife, Phoebe (Wood) Lawton have a son, Edward Christopher Lawton, my dad.

Look at that...father and son.

NOW ON TO CHRISTOPHER AND SARAH
This page, however, is dedicated to Christopher's first wife, Sarah Abigail Jamison or Jamieson, and his daughters, Eva, Dora and Vivian.
In 1891, Christopher and Sarah are in their 20's and have three daughters,
1. Cosman, Eva M - born: 1887 @ NB
2. Cosman, Dora M - born: 1889 @ NB, Canada
3. Cosman, Vivian - born: 1891 @ NB
Christopher next turns up on the USA 1910 Census in a boarding house near Boston Mass., from where he perhaps attended the marriage of his daughter Dora M. Cosman to Roy Tamlyn, that took place on 12 April, 1910, near Boston.
Then Christopher is found on the 1911 Canadian census, living in Vancouver with his wife and his daughter, Mrs Eva Kay.
There are frustating mistakes on this census in Christopher and Sarah's dates as well as M instead of S for Sarah, but I feel it is them as mistakes are rampant.

Christopher was born in 13 June, 1962, so there is a mistake there too. So what is the truth about the mother-in-law? Did people lie, did Eva or William just guess for the enumerator or did someone just copy it down wrong or did Chris have another woman? Frustrating. Eva came up to Christopher's funeral in 1939. She died in 1983, aged 96.

BC Archives Back in New Brunswick in 1919, Christopher is working in Saint John NB as a teamster and boarding at 80 Brussels St.
In a 1929 directory of Saint John, he is a farmer on the Old Black River Road where my dad was born in 1921.
Sarah
seemed to disappear but....here she is..... ( photo gift of Barbara Tamlyn)

Sarah was a most beautiful woman and a true survivor, living to the great age of 103. This picture was taken in Saint John, NB.
This lovely lady lived to be 103 years old. Family lore in her descendants in the States, however, say she was a lady before her time and would have gone out to work had the times permitted. She was an original strong minded woman, a difficult personality, perhaps frustrated by being "held back" as women were in those days. She married twice and lived as a widow for many years with her daughter Eva. Sarah broke her hip at age 100 but lived 3 more years.
She brought up the girls, it seems, in New Brunswick after she and Chris parted, possibly with the help of her mother, Mary Ann Tamlyn-Jamieson. She does not show up on the 1901 census but many photos were taken in saint John.

This is her house and the cemetery where she is buried.

As young man

Chris worked also as teamster and farmer.....and who knows....

A hard worker

Photos gifts of Barbara Tamlyn.
Christopher Cosman looks like a powerful man, strong, serious, and brooding. The family lore about him is that he was a stern task-master and did not spare the whip, that he was a hard-working farmer who kept the Lawton kids from starving, that he was a magician with horses, that he was a nice man with brown eyes and hair, that he gave slips of roses to neighbours and that they still bloom, that he drove the waggon to town from the Old Black River Road to sell vegetables and that he cut wood at Mispec.
The Lawton descendants have called him...that boarder...and the story goes that there was jealousy over the land and that some of them beat Chris up when he was 77 and that he died some weeks after this.

Phoebe called him Chris and husband.

My Dad never mentioned his name.
There it is, the brooding spirit.
