In 1864 there were 45 large sawmills in Digby County as well as many smaller ones. Some of the earlier ones were erected by Solomon Bunnell & Samuel Goldsbury on the Sissiboo River and by Col Taylor & John Journeay on Indian Creek in 1784. Col Moody & Capt John Cosman erected one on Cosman's Creek in 1790. Enough lumber was being sawn in the St Marys Bay area to support an export trade with the West Indies by the 1790's. Lumber was bought from mill owners at $5.00 per thousand board feet and sold in the West Indies at $50.00 per thousand.

The Missing Boys
This article appeared in The Daily Telegraph, a newspaper published in Saint John, New Brunswick. It was in the September 26, 1877 edition.
Two little boys named Corey COSMAN and Yerxa COSMAN, youngest sons of William COSMAN have been missing since yesterday morn. They got their breakfast and went out to play and have not been seen since. Any information regarding their whereabouts will be gladly received by their father, William Cosman, tinsmith, in Finlay's building on Charlotte St. They were 10 and 12 years old respectively, but rather small for their age.
This follow-up appeared in the newspaper on September 28, 1877:
The two boys, sons of William COSMAN who left their home on Monday morn. after breakfast and had disappeared, were found on Tuesday morn. by their father at Norton (Kings Co.) They had walked all the way to Norton where they put up at a relative's house.
Jacob Cosman
JACOB4 COSMAN (JAMES3, JAMES2, JOHANNES1 KAUSMAN) was born 13 February 1841 in Kingston, N.B., and died 22 August 1890 in Kingston, N.B.. He married MARGARET M. SPRAGG 07 October 1862 in Kingston, N.B., daughter of DAVID SPRAGG and JANE CRAWFORD. She was born 13 February 1840 in Saint John, N.B., and died 12 June 1903 in Saint John, N.B..
Notes for JACOB COSMAN:
Jacob spent two years in the U.S.. He was baptized a Baptist but did not join a church until some years later when the Free Christian Baptist Church was organized, and he was made a deacon of that church. He was a great church supporter and an outstanding member of the community. He lived on the homestead; his mother lived with them in her declining years.
Jacob built the first home on his piece of property in the village of Kingston and donated land at the back of the property for the Kingston Baptist Church burial grounds. Additional land has been donated by succeeding generations and many family members are buried there.
Jacob and his brother, Shalor, married two sisters, Margaret and Mary Ann Spragg. Thus two of their sons, Springer Cosman and John Wesley Cosman, were the greatest of friends and took great pride in being "Double Cousins".
An outstanding member of the community and an ardent supporter of the Free Christian Baptist Church, Jacob owned a grist mill, saw mill, shingle machine, carding machine and blacksmith shop in Lower Kingston, N.B..
The 1871 census lists the family thus:
