LACKIE FAMILYThis is a featured page

Samuel Lackie came from Tyrone, Ireland about 1820 and was given a land grant in Upham, NB, in 1824. He settled in Upham where the family farmed and married into the Loyalist Families of Smith, Bull, Sherwood and Beyea.

I have extensive research on many lines, including female lines.

Bert Lackie, my grandfather, married into the Irish Davidsons who settled in Saint Martins.

Both the Lackies and the Davidsons came from Northern Ireland and were originally Scots.

LETTER FROM CHARITY ELIZABETH (SMITH ) LACKIE TO DAUGHTER CHART, short for Charity, in 1915

Upham, King’s Co.
Dec 9 1915
My Dear Chart,
I have been trying to get time to write to you this long while but the way to get time is to take time, I quess. How are you? Did your cough get better? I got a letter from Harvey last week with his photo- he looks a good deal better. Crazy to get to the fighting line- I wonder how he can feel that way. Where is Ernest now? I hope he is among those quartered in St.John. His battalion won’t be going overseas till spring, I hope. Harvey's battalion has been training since July so I am expecting to hear of it going at any time.

Dalton has been into some engagement for I got one of those dreadful cards dated Nov.12 over a week ago but I got a letter dated Nov. 2Oth from him Tuesday so he came through alright. He gave no particulars only that this was nothing to the time they had in October. He wants some more tobacco but says only send one pound as he had to give most of that first five pounds away as it was too much to carry around. He says it need not be registered but to see that it is a good strong package as a lot of the parcels get broken and are thrown away. I suppose good strong paper with plenty of strong twine wound about it would be safe. Postage to France is about 32 cents a pound I think. I saw in the paper that some parcels were only paid postage for England (12c a pound) and were held up but the authorities decided to let them go on to France but gave notice that the French rates must be paid in future. I also saw a notice to be sure to pack parcels securely to prevent loss. You know his address I suppose but for fear of mistakes I’ll give it. Pte J.D. Lackie, 69527, 26th Battalion M.G. S., 2nd Canadian Contingent, B.E.F., Anny Post Office, London, England.
Send me the bill and I’ll transfer the amount into Orion’s account. (Saucy are’nt I)
Now I have another commission for you. I was going to send to Simpson’s for a Xmas present for you and E and children and also for Bert and E. and Marjory but it struck me you might be able to suit all hands better so I will enclose two dollars and tell you what I thought of as a suggestion and you can make any change you like. I saw little hair combs with ribbon bows at 23 c & 25c that I thought would be nice for the three little girlies and boxes of initial cards and envelopes for you and Emma; I couldn’t make any decision about Bert and Ernest so get whatever you think they would like. Lura and Janie each sent parcels to the boys - Lura sent fruitcakes - (Joe told me he was up with his papa about three weeks ago but L isn’t coming to see me any more for a while and she isn’t mad at me neither- can you guess - pray oh pray with all your heart that all may be right) I don’t know what Janie sent but I gave Orion some socks to take down to go in her parcels. I forgot to send those mittens you 14t for Harvey but I suppose he would not be allowed to wear any thing but kahki anyway. We are getting along fine, father and me all alone. Weather very dull(I suppose it is worse in St.J) but not cold. I must write a card to Dalton for he did not get all his letters somehow so I am sending him a card every week so will get some of them. He says he “doesn’t care” but I can guess what that means.
Haven’t heard from Susan this good while only Janie said in her letter that she had been up to see her.

Kiss the dear children for grandma. I wish I could see little fairy Lura running round with Susie watching so she will not fall.
Mother with love to you all wishing everyone a happy Christmas.

William SMITH, postmaster of Salt Springs (Kings Co.), who reached this yesterday, brought sad news of a terrible fatality which occurred in that city early yesterday morn. by which Robert Lackie lost his life. For many years the deceased had been living at Salt Springs and for the last few years had lived with his wife and daughter. (see original 'Perished In the Flames'). Robert Lackie was 64 years of age and leaves a widow and seven grown children. Three daughters are married as are two of the sons, while a third, who is unmarried, lived on the homestead which his father made over to him about eight years ago. Salt Springs (Kings Co.) March 30 - A sad occurrence on Sunday morn. casts a gloom over the place. At an early hour the house of Robert Lackie was found to be on fire. Mr. Lackie, in spite of the efforts of his wife to hold him back, rushed into the house to secure a box in which he kept his papers. He did not return and his daughter Annie Lackie ran barefoot to the nearest house to obtain help. It was too late to save her father, as that part of the house was in flames. Annie's feet were badly frozen. About 8 o'clock the charred remains were taken from the ruin. Deceased leaves a wife and eight children.

HAMMONDVALE - Tears fell as the remains of Gladys Winifred Fowler were carried to the top of a hill to be placed alongside her parents in the Hammondvale Cemetery, about 40 kilometres outside of Sussex.

The final chapter of the story of a forgotten daughter who died 92 years ago in London ended on Sunday afternoon in a long-awaited service. There was pageantry befitting a late senator's child with a touch of an era of long ago as members of the 8th Canadian Hussars dressed in 19th century costume slowly trudged their way up the slippery slope of the graveyard, led by a bag piper.
Joining the procession were the niece and nephew of the deceased, here from the United States.
"This is extraordinary," said niece Jane Fowler Morse of New York. "The kindness of the Canadian people makes us feel like we're Canadians again "¦ the kindness and generosity and interest of all the Canadian people."
With her was her brother John Fowler of Pennsylvania.

Gladys Winifred Fowler was born on June 4, 1898 to George William Fowler and Ethyl Georgina Fowler (nee Wilson). She had two younger brothers, Eric MacLeod Fowler (born 1900) and Cedric Weeden Fowler (born 1905). Gladys Winifred Fowler, called Winifred by her brother Cedric, was a beautiful and talented young woman. She studied the piano. Many years after her death, her brother Cedric praised her skill. He loved to listen to piano music. Winifred was an educated and modern young woman. When the family was in Ottawa during sessions of Parliament, Winifred attended a women’s seminary there. She also studied piano at the Toronto Conservatory.

In 1916, Gladys Winifred Fowler traveled to London with her mother Ethyl and younger brothers, Eric and Cedric, to join their father and husband. George William Fowler was the commander of the 104th Battalion, C. E. F. Colonel Fowler had previously left for England with his unit. While there, Winifred assisted the Red Cross, caring for wounded soldiers. According to Cedric, she continued studying piano in London at the Imperial Conservatory during the war.

In 1918, while living in a row house in Northwest London, the family was bombed out. Afterwards the mother and daughter stayed at Berner’s Hotel. As a result of this incident, Winifred became seriously ill. She suffered from measles and pneumonia, complicated by a heart condition, the result of bout of rheumatic fever, which she had as a child. She died at the hotel at age 18. I

n September 1918, Winifred’s mother and brother Cedric, then aged 13, returned to Sussex after the war without her. Her father and her brother Eric, who had been seriously wounded in the war, traveled separately.

Now, 92 years later, Winifred will return to the peaceful valley of Hammondvale to be buried at the Hammondvale Community Cemetery, where her father, mother, brother Eric, grandfather and great-grandfather and their families lie buried as well. The Fowler family homestead stands nearby.

On Sunday, an emotional John Fowler said the family now has closure.
"There was unfinished business, I'd say that was finished today," he said. "I'm humbled."

Answer to a question.... TO LOLO BALL

I do not think the Lackies of Upham, NB are connected to Hugh Lackie that you are researching or to the O’Conners. Samuel Lackie and his wife Matilda Hanlon came from Tyrone Ireland and they were Protestant. I have not found their ancestors in Ireland as yet but hope to try. Family lore puts their past in Scotland and that they were part of the Protestant settlers that were brought in to replace the Catholics....so they were part of the Protestant Irish. Also, they always believed that Samuel was the only one of his family to come to Canada.
Even so, these Scots became Irish to their depths and lived on potatoes always. We still speak with a Northern Irish accent that people remark upon....a way of speaking that involves expressions as well. We were brought up with that dour Protestant work ethic, stiff upper lip and fierce independence that guarded feelings well. ( that’s the Scot part ) My mother, Muriel Lackie and her sister, Audrey, were beautiful singers and the family are poets for sure ....but each is an individual, keeping self under wraps. Books were more important to us than food and the ability to see magic in the world....in a secretive and individual way.....speaks of the inner life of this Irish bunch.
But Catholic.....they would never be that.
I will keep a look-out for the people you are interested in...Best, Darlene Love
