I received a call from a gentleman in Nova Scotia last year who was inquiring for a relative in England about a Richard Woffendale Lawton who was buried at an airfield in Cumbria England. The tombstone said Riuchard was born in Saint John, so the Nova Scotia gent called all the Lawtons in Saint John until some one sent him on to me. I had Richard's father in my computer files, so now I could add the son.
The English couple walked by Richard's grave often and began to wonder about his story and why he was buried in England, at an air training base. This is Richard's story...............
Gerrie Bastie, from Nova Scotia called me and put me in touch with Angela and Jim Smith in England, an amazing couple, so informed, curious, respectful and kind.
Emails flew and resulted in this story, written by Angela and Jim.

I have found, through British War Records, the names, records and burial places of the other crew members who died with Richard and I have Richard's Canadian War records which I will post. He was 5' 8" tall, of slight build, had brown hair and eyes and was a bank clerk before joining RAF. Living descendants of John Lawton's line had never heard of him so I have failed, so far, to find a picture of Richard. One descendant, living close by, has old pictures ,but so far has not let me see them. What I did do , however, with the help of kind strangers from across the seas, was to rescue Richard Woffendale Lawton from forgotten oblivion. The lamp still burns as long as we honour them, our brave, young ancestors.Lawton Genealogy, John Lawton Loyalist
