I will do John Lawton's line in detail, right up to present day, without exposing modern dates for safety reasons. This is gratifying and exasperating, because John's line is easier to find than James' line, which I wish I could find in more detail. The Lawton's I have spoken to are still in character from what I remember as a child, fiercely independent, secretive and not easily approached. The stiff upper lip and aristrocratic nose is still intact.

The model was not based on a vessel of the same name, but appears to have been built to advertise the firm of William and James Lawton and New Brunswick shipbuilding in general.
Upon completion the model hung in the drug store of Dr. John Smith, Dock Street, Saint John
The model was used in a parade celebrating the turning of the first sod for the Eastern and North American Railway in 1853, and shortly thereafter it was donated to the Saint John Mechanics Institute, a forerunner of the New Brunswick Museum.

A HISTORY OF ROWING IN SAINT JOHN, N.B.

The first organized regatta was held in Saint John in 1836. This included races for fouroared pilot gigs, skiffs double, single sculls, sail boats and canoes. The NONPARIETAL, a four-oared racing boat built for the occasion by Charles Lawton, was rowed by an amateur crew of clerks and mechanics and won over gigs and pilot boats. This success gave great impetus to boat building in Saint John.

Charles Lawton then built a twenty foot boat 20 inches wide with wooden outriggers. It was first rowed by Lawton and he won. This led to several sculls built by Lawton and R. Dalton.

In 1838 there was a regatta on the 28th June, the Queen's Coronation Day. In the first race HAZZARD of Carleton won, second was HARLEQUIN, third was TRUE BLUE followed by CORONATION, LAWTON, VENTURE, WRIGHT, WASP, INDIANTOWN and BLUE BONNET. This certainly demonstrates the interest and rivalry of the day!
