The magic of books, of the bits that trickled in, one or two Bobbsy Twins, a stray Nancy Drew, By the Shores of Silver Lake by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Fog Magic, Helen Keller Story, all fragments, all magic, like The Five Little Peppers .......... mud, mud pies, cow paddies, cow paddies fights, snow, snow caves, forts, balls, sliding, ice, skating, eating icicles, ice boxes, ice cream, Popsicles...........cows, cowgirls and boys, feet for horses, guns, danger, daring.............bikes, no hands.........water, swimming, ditches, culverts, damns, brooks, lakes, fishing, rafts, frogs, polliwogs........night, hide and seek, stars..........dolls, doll dishes, doll clothes, carriages.........boxes, box houses, box towns...........wood, wood piles, planks, saw-horses, teeter-totters, sling shots, bows and arrows, go-carts, sticks, poles, bats............balls, strikes, hits, fielders, catchers, batters..........fights, fists, words......woods, camps, cabins, rocks, kitchens in shade..........berries, strawberries in grass, blueberries on bushes, cranberries in bogs, raspberries in thickets, currants and choke-cherries, apples in bags and barrels, on bed, reading, eating apples, tag, running, wind, twirling, dizzy, world turning on pillows, sick..............fire, fire in stoves, in grass, in woods, on beaches, matches, strike and suck black.........candles, run your finger through..........buckets, carry water, swing water, prime pumps......climb...trees, fences, roofs,poles, search .....dumps, drawers, castoffs,........imagine.........detectives, princess, girl-hero, fear..........unknown future, what school......what job........what friend.........what to do.......where to go.........alone.

When a child I was lonely and now I love to be alone. I enjoy my own company. When a child I was thrown back on my own resources. Now I am independent. When a child I had imagination and a sense of magic, of otherness, of the unseen. I still do. When a child I was me, entire. Now I hold the child within, in tact.
