Darlene, I just discovered your story today after googling "Old Black River Road". My name is Paulette Riley (nee Sheppard), now living in Vancouver. And my sister was the Patsy Shepherd (sic) you spoke of who was 10 years older than me. (She died in 2003 in Saint John.) My brother, Bob, is 15 years older than me. I think he may have hung out with Ronnie Myers, apparently not something to brag about! My mother, Anna Sheppard, just passed away last month at the age of 89, so you can imagine how emotional I became after reading your reference to her. I was amazed at how astutely accurate your description was of my mother considering your young age at the time. Yes, I agree, it was hard for anyone to feel sorry for her because she did always "seem in so much control of herself." Everyone who knew her referred to her as "strong-willed", even at her funeral. (A minor correction, hope you don't mind - yes, she was Hungarian, but not "slavic", but I can see how you would consider her to look "slavic", so different from all the anglo neighbours.
Thank you so much for making your story available for all to read. It certainly was a different way of life! And then there was Kate McCardle! Regards, Paulette
