King St. at Marker Slip pre 1877
Scene at foot of King Street and Market Slip, Saint John, pre 1877 fire. The corner building in the foreground is Campbell Berryman’s hardware store. A door or more to one side, James McConnell kept a boot and shoe store; George Everett had a drug store in the same building. The corner building across the street is a large retail and wholesale clothing establishment, which flourished under the management of Messrs. Whittaker and Stronach. Near the head of North wharf was a drug store, successfully conducted by "Tom" M. Reid, who was in later years mayor of the city. Neither of these buildings remain; however, the face of buildings along the north wharf remain, along with any inner walls and wooden floors worthy of keeping. The buildings rebuilt on the site in 1877-1882 had some of the bricks salvaged to recreate 7 warehouse exteriors during the 1970s-1983 construction of Market Square. Today these buildings house businesses, offices, and eating establishments. At one time an Irving gas station was located on the corner closest to the dock.

Today it is the main entrance to Market Square. Berryman’s spot is taken up with the Irving owned Brunswick House office building, and next to it is the Delta Hotel

Opera House was on Union St., the remains of which was the Ideal Stores, now apartments. It belonged to Mr Golding, a relative of the Cosman's, and friend of Louis B. Mayer.
