The Cosman's of Kingston
James Jr. Cosman 2008 1 Descendants of James Jr. Cosman Generation No. 1 1. JAMES JR.3 COSMAN (JAMES2, JOHANNES1 KAUSMAN) was born 14 Jun 1791 in Sissiboo, Digby County, Nova Scotia, and died 05 Feb 1855 in Gorham's Creek, Kings County, New Brunswick. He married ELIZABETH ANN GOLDING 28 Apr 1814 in Wickham, Queens County, New Brunswick, daughter of JOHN GOLDING and RUTH SHALOR. She was born 10 Sep 1796 in Wickham, Queens County, New Brunswick, and died 10 Oct 1886 in Kingston, New Brunswick. Notes for JAMES JR. COSMAN: Died Kingston, Kings County, 5th ult, James Cosman, age 65. Feb. 1855 Weekly Chronicle, Saint John, recorded in Vital Statistics from New Brunswick newspapers, 1854-1856, Item #1718. However, in a letter from Mary E. Cosman (Mrs. Otty Keith) in 1964, James' death is given as Dec 5, 1856. Whether from a spirit of adventure, or a need to find more farm land or both, James moved to New Brunswick, Canada in 1811. He settled near Kingston, at a spot called Gorham's Creek. The creek runs inland from the Saint John River and the old homestead had a beautiful view of the river and the islands in it. James was buried at Tennant's Cove, across the river from the homestead at Gorham's Creek, since it was easier for winter burial than to go to Kingston. James and Betsy Ann's family were Baptist Farmers. The 1851 Parish of Kingston Census lists the family thus: Cosman, James m Husband 60 British Farmer/Prop. Loyalist .......James was german( Darlene Love)Elizabeth A. f wife 55 Fanny G. d daughter 24 Shalor m son 21 farmer Elijah m son 17 George m son 14 Elisha m son 11 Jacob m son 10 Sarah E. Guion widow 28 Proprietor Isaac Guion son 10 Betsey A. Guion dr. 9 James D. Guion son 8 Sarah E. Guion dr. 4 Sarah E Cosman...daughter, married Gilead Guion
Davey Thompson bought the place and ran the store.
Davey Thompson in the store.
According to Judy Cosman's book....this was the original homestead, at Shamper's Bluff.
(Three of James and Betsy Ann's children homesteaded at Head of Millstream, Kings County, at a location later known as Cosman Settlement.
The three were: James T. Cosman m. Mary Ann Gorham John Nelson Cosman m. Lydia Ann Scheck Barbara Ann Cosman m. Charles S. Gorham More about them later.....)
There is record of a Land petition submitted by James Cosman, which can be seen at ANB, dated June 23, 1825. In it, he states that he is 35 years of age, married and a native of Nova Scotia for the last 14 years. James is buried at Tennant's Cove (Archives New Brunswick) Cemetery, next to his sister, Sarah Elizabeth Cosman Secord. His stone is a white slab with broken rose branch in circle at the top. The stone is reset. inscription reads: In / memory of / Jas Cosman, / Died 5th Dec. 1855, / aged 65 years/ - / He left this world in peace / To dwell in heaven where Jesus is. (Kaye Cosman Nath)
