Ruddock, John C.

John C. Ruddock. Born in the city of St. John, NB, Mar.13, 1852, and accompanied his parents to New York, where his father left the family, consisting of the mother and three children, and went to California. In the spring of 1853 the father sent for the family, who came to California by way of the Isthmus of Panama, and settled in Jamestown, Tuolumne co. There James Ruddock, the father, engaged in mining, merchandising, stock-raising and lumbering at different times, and was one of the leading and influential citizens of the county. The children attended whatever private schools there were in the vicinity until the establishment of the public schools, which institutions were attended regularly by them. In 1868 John passed an examination before the Co. School Board, and obtained a second grade certificate, and engaged to teach school at Green Springs, Tuolumne co. After completing a term of about 7 months he followed the family, who had moved to San Francisco and entered the State Normal school. He graduated from that institution in March, 1871, and soon engaged to teach at Onisbo public school, about 15 miles south of Sacramento on the river near Courtland Landing. Next he came to Mendocino co. and took charge of the public school at Mendocino, in August, 1871. He continued until June, 1875, when he went to Round Valley, Mendocino co. to teach an unexpired term of about 6 months. In the fall of 1875 he was elected to the position of County Superintendent of Public Schools, to which position he was re-elected in 1878. During his incumbency he, for two terms, acted as Vice-Principal of the Ukiah City school, and before retiring from office was chosen to the Principalship, which he holds at the present writing. Mr. Ruddock was married Feb. 4, 1880, to Kate Siddons. His parents are both living, and reside in San Francisco.

After completing a term of about seven months he followed the family, who had moved to San Francisco in the meantime, and entered the State Normal school. Graduated in March, 1871, and soon after engaged to teach the Onisbo public school, about fifteen miles south of Sacramento City, on the river near Courtland Landing. From there he came to Mendocino co. and took charge of the public school at Mendocino City, in August, 1871. He continued in that position until June, 1875, when he went to Round valley, Mendocino co, to teach an unexpired term of about six months. In the fall of 1875 he was elected on the Democratic ticket to the position of County Superintendent of Public Schools, to which position he was re-elected in 1878. During his incumbency in office he, for two terms, acted as Vice-Principal of the Ukiah City school, before retiring from office was chosen to the Principalship, which he holds at present. Married February 4, 1880, to Kate Siddons. His father and mother are both living, and reside in San Francisco.

I remember May Day Festivals. They were usually held on the last day of school. We would dress up in our finest dresses, hair done nice with ribbons and head out to school with such anticipated excitement.
Parents would come and set in the seats set up on the school lawn. Old Brownie cameras were held ready.
Maypoles were danced around, classes sang "Bingo" and "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly" and Jack Lalane's workout song of "Push Ups Every Morning, 10 Times!" was played as a class did the PE routine to it.
Ahhh....those were the days!

Anyone trace either of these immigrants to anyone in Tyrone Ireland? Or know source of claim they were from there & family previously from Scotland?? I find lots of family trees of Lackies in Ireland, but can't connect.
