Hello, I have not been convinced about my relationship to the NB Lawtons, although I hoped one existed. But I remember my mother saying (when I was about 12) that a branch of my father's family was from Yorkshire and had known the Bronte sisters. I have never been to Yorkshire, but would love to go. Also loved Wuthering Heights and poetry from that period.

When I visited haworth I saw the Lawton name over lots of shops. I love Yorkshire and the Brontes too. Give me some names of parents or grandparents and I will look around.

Marjorie was my gradmother and I have only the most amazing memories of her, be it the trips to visit her uptown or out to Old Black River Road. She was the MOST amazing person to all of her grandchildren. I still remember every weekend meeting her at Locklomand mall and simply sitting with her for hours talking while she bought us an icecream from the DQ that was in the mall. Those are the memories I will always cherish since she died while I was still young.

Do you know any more about Mount Prospect and who were your great-great-grandparents. There was suposed to be a castle up there once.

John Munroe was buried at Fernhill Cemetery. Check out #8 on www.Fernhillcemetery.ca/fernhill/tour_map.jsp for a write up of his obit.
black river road is toward St Martins way and Old Black River Road is the road we grew up on. I believe there is a black river area up in northern NB. also. Some where near the Miramichi.

The Lawton house on Germain Street was owned by James Lawton, shipbuilder, son of John Lawton, the Loyalist. There were 4 Lawton families in Saint John...I did all of them until I figured out who was who. The Lawtons on OBRR come from a George Lawton who came over from England. In England, all of them are connected.
There is another Lawton house on Union, if they haven`t torn it down recently for new police station...belonged to John Lawton and later toWilliam Graves Lawton, business man...also from England.

Hi, Darlene. I'd read about this before, but again confused about the location. How can "Black River Road" be considered to be in "the Loch Lomond area"? And the crime scene was said to be at the junction of "Black River Road" and "Quaco Road". I always figured the "Black River Road" where this murder took place was not the same road we grew up on. Any thoughts?

I am trying to find out more about the "Little River Tragedy".
In June 1878, 28-year old William VAUGHAN was hanged for the murder of Mary QUINN in St John, New Brunswick,
William Vaughan is buried in the Old Wesleyan Burial ground. ( This is on Thorne Ave,)Records from graveyard said he was 28 at the time of his death and survived by 2 brothers, parents were deceased ( Captain Thomas and Mary Ann Vaughan ) There are a few sketchy news accounts and names like Sullivan, Henry and Davidson, names from our road, testified. Also, our road was then know as Little River.

Names on the grant list show up on the Old Black River Road. Ball lake was probably named for the grantee..George ball. The deed to Eddie lawton's little acre that he bought from his brother, earl, refers to the Hazen estate. Hazen, Simonds and White were the first business men in the area.

Wow! I found this page by accident, googling my last name. Don't know if I am remotely related to all of you, since I am from the US, and my family is/was from the south of the US. I do remember hearing that the ancestors in the US were loyalists to Britain, so maybe they were related. Anyway like your group, and the photos of your family and their life in Canada are wonderful. Really unique and special, and I hope to visit your group again.

That is probably your line. They all came over from Endland before that. Leo Lawton has site about Lawtons. Very good. a magazine as well. Try Lawton Ledger or Leo lawton. PS Loyalists went some to England and some to Canada and other places.

I always suspected there was something about Old Black River Road that was hidden beneath the surface, but I really had no idea to what extent. A hermit, murder, suicide.... I am so grateful to Darlene and the Lawton family for unearthing it. It's like a suspense novel. I'm sitting on the edge of my seat for what's to come next!
Question: When did Oscar Craig die?

Hi Darlene,
Just a couple of corrections. The date of Dad's death is actually March 29, 1987. The baby in the colour picture is Dad holding my daughter Rachel. It was taken some time in Jan of 1978 when Rachel was about a month old. :-)

Thanks for posting my pics, I hate to tell you this, though, but I have to - you keep spelling our last name wrong! :-) It's Sheppard, not Shepherd. BTW, I love what you wrote about your father. I recently put together a photo book of my mother's life and had it ready just a month before she passed away, so everyone at the funeral was able to view it. I'd love for you to see it.
